In this episode Adam Gowland draws on his experience as a commissioner and as a developer of supported housing to explain the realities of developing property for supported living. He has commissioned a diverse range of accommodation-based services including drug and alcohol treatment facilities, transitional accommodation for people leaving hospital with complex physical and/or mental health support requirements, and long-term supported living for people with a learning disability and autistic people. In this episode Jean Templeton Chief Executive of St Basils, a charity supporting young people in the West Midlands, shares how they have developed an innovative housing model to support young people who are working. She explains the successes and challenges of getting this set up and how they have managed to develop housing that is a truly affordable for young people on apprenticeships. In this episode Louise Keevil explains the issues facing young people transitioning from residential settings and how her experience with this led her to co-found a charity which is working to give young people a voice in choosing where they live. Where I Want To Live has been created by families and experts who have direct experience of supporting and guiding young adults to make choices about where and how they live. We promote the vision of a country where adults with learning disabilities have real choice about where and how they live. Everyone seems to agree that adults with learning disabilities should have choice and control over their lives and legislation supports this. However, despite everyone’s best efforts this is often not the case. Our first steps have been to co-produce an engaging digital toolkit that empowers people with learning disabilities to discuss share and plan where and how they live. In this episode Eleanor Tallon explains the Deprivation of Liberty process, shares tips for providers who are working through the process and helps us understand the safeguards that must be in place. Eleanor explains how we often get the terminology wrong and why using the correct terminology is so important. Eleanor Tallon is a highly skilled Independent Social Worker, Best Interest Assessor, and Expert Witness, bringing over 16 years of post-graduate experience in social work. In 2022, she expanded her expertise into private rehabilitation case management and established MCA Professional, an independent service dedicated to producing legally robust reports for the Court of Protection, professional deputies, and public authorities. Throughout her career, Eleanor has developed in-depth knowledge of acquired brain injury, learning disabilities, autism spectrum condition, and various cognitive and mental health impairments. She specialises in multi-agency support planning, therapeutic interventions, safeguarding, risk management, mental capacity and best interest assessments, as well as Deprivation of Liberty assessments. In addition to her core practice, Eleanor provides independent advocacy and delivers bespoke training and consultancy on the Mental Capacity Act 2005. In this episode David Abbey explains two different ways that people with long term disabilities can secure mortgages and buy their own home, even if they do not have mental capacity. This is an important episode as it opens up possibility of home ownership for people who may not think it is an option for them. It may be of interest to parents, carers and organisations supporting people with a long term disability. David Abbey has worked in the financial services sector since 1984 and is a fully qualified Financial Adviser. Back in 1997 he was invited to join a ‘steering group’ to develop a process that would enable people with a disability, who also relied on benefits as their sole/main source of income, to buy a home of their own. The challenges that this presented at the time seemed insurmountable but thanks to the support of key figures in the disability sector, Housing Associations, Social Workers, an open minded lender and the drive of parents, carers and the potential buyers themselves a unique shared ownership model, known as HOLD (Home Ownership for people with Long-term Disabilities), was developed and launched with the Government’s approval. David then established MySafeHome to provide everyone involved in helping buyers with a disability to realise their dream of home ownership with all of the advice and support they need. On top of giving people with disabilities (over 1,600 of them so far) the freedom to choose the location and type of property they live in, crucially HOLD also provides the security of tenure that simply NO other housing solution delivers. The specialist mortgages that make HOLD possible are also increasingly being used to help people with disabilities to buy brand new Affordable Shared Ownership homes too. As HOLD isn’t currently available in all parts of the country (Housing Associations can’t be compelled to support it) this helps to give many more people with disabilities (who, as with HOLD applicants, also rely on benefits for their income) the life changing chance to buy a home of their own. In this episode Dr Simon Duffy talks about his experience creating homes for people with a learning disability since the late 1980's. He discusses the different approaches he has developed and been involved with and uses this wealth of experience to challenge today's practice. This important conversation is informative but it is also a thought provoking episode that challenges you to think differently. Dr Simon Duffy is a philosopher and activist. His work has focused on how to create a world where everyone matters. He has worked closely with people with intellectual disabilities and their families to develop personalised and self-directed support and he was one of the founding members of the Supported living Project in 1992. He has created several organisations including Inclusion Glasgow, In Control, the Centre for Welfare Reform and Citizen Network. He was awarded the Prince Albert Medal for his work on personal budgets and self-directed support in England and he founded the SDS Network. Simon believes we need to change our economic and democratic systems, he works on basic income with UBI Lab Network and the Basic Income Research Group and on democratic reform with the Neighbourhood Democracy Movement.
